In addition to a scene with brownface, Kramer adopts AAVE while speaking with Black characters and perpetuates racist stereotypes against Asian men by having his house guests from Japan sleep in dresser drawers. The studio audience may clap for Kramer when he bursts into Jerry's apartment, but so many of his side storylines deserve jeering, not applause. Jerry isn't the only one embroiled in racist moments, though. In another episode, Jerry demeans Chinese women, telling Elaine, " If I like their race, how can that be racist?" The offhand dehumanization of groups of people is just one of the many harsh realities of watching Seinfeld now. As mentioned above, Jerry's offensive gift to Elaine is bad enough, but Jerry also tries to convince Winona that she's being too sensitive about the jokes he's telling at the expense of Indigenous people. Seinfeld's cast and characters are memorable, but even a show that's intentionally about jerks can't defend its instances of overt racism.
